Why Hemp jeans?

Hemp jeans? Jeans made of hemp??? Actually, it's not that weird if you take in account that the first pair of Levi's jeans were actually made from hemp. Hemp jeans will last longer than any other jeans not made of hemp and will only become softer and smoother with time.

Most jeans are currently being made of cotton. When buying cotton jeans, one should take into consideration that cotton, as oppose to hemp, is one of the most harming crops cultivated on Earth today. While cotton covers 2.4% of the world's farmland, about 24% of the insecticides and 10% of the pesticides sold worldwide are used for its cultivation. According to the Pesticide Action Network North America (PANNA), the pesticides used on cotton - even when used accordingly - harms people, wildlife and the environment. In addition to that, a great amount of water is required to grow cotton - 22,000 liters of water is required to produce one kg of cotton, which equals to a t-shirt and pair of jeans according to the World Wildlife Federation (WWF).

Hemp is much more eco-friendly than cotton:

  • It requires little or no pesticides, as it is naturally pest resistant.

  • Hemp naturally fertilizes the soil for future crops, as oppose to cotton which deteriorates the soil.

  • Hemp is a particularly high yield fiber crop. In fact, an acre of hemp produces more biomass than most other crops.

  • Hemp requires only moderate amounts of water for its cultivation.

Hemp jeans are way superior to cotton jeans - not only is hemp more eco-friendly than cotton, it is several times stronger than cotton. It is more resistant to abrasion and tears. It's more resistant to mildew, soiling, shrinkage and the deteriorating effects of the sun.
